I recently posted a blog on LinkedIn which invited people to take a leadership performance assessment based on how “authentic” they were. The assessment is based on the excellent book “Why should anyone be led by you?” by Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones and looks at what it takes to be an authentic leader. The word “authentic” frequently comes up when I ask “What makes a good leader”, yet knowing how to show you are authentic might not be so easy to articulate.

The questionnaire asks you to assess areas such as your impact on your people. For example, whether you inspire them, how trusted you are, if you are seen as fair but also able to make tough decisions. It asks about your leadership skills such as empathy. For instance, questions about the degree to which you know your people and whether you are able to flex your style effectively without confusion. There are questions about your influence, such as your political awareness. Many of these leadership attributes can be attributed to emotional intelligence and the proven competencies that great leaders have in this area.
